Empowerment through communication. That was the message throughout Wally Dion’s exhibit “Star Blankets,” on display until February 19th at the Ottawa Art Gallery. In this exhibit, curated by Catherine Sinclair, Dion uses circuit boards to create hanging tapestries that demonstrate the importance of community. The circuit boards, once brought together, create grids that look like cities seen from Google Earth. These connections, or lack of, are about the human connections in contemporary life. Dion’s work “Game Over” lacks the circuit connections and is used to show the maze and labour issues that can arise in consumer culture. In contrast, his works featuring the morning star and circuit connections demonstrate community; specifically among First Nations and generally among the international community.
