C-Lab is a London-based collaborative art organization whose projects explore intersections of art, science, and technology, focusing especially on the artistic amalgamation of organic and synthetic life forms. Founded by artists Laura Cinti and Howard Boland, who both work with biology, C-Lab exhibits art installations based on scientific and explorative research and generates discussions in both forums.
This work, Stress-O-Stat, is essentially an experiment in which stress in bacteria is witnessed artfully, as light. According to the project description on C-Lab’s website, the installation “combines scientific instruments, methods, and aesthetics to produce a real and speculative device.” In this process, it further mediates the relationship between life forms and machines and sees the machine becoming a sort of incubator for life, while the bacteria systematically reacts to its stress-filled environment and becomes a light source.
