David Clark

David Clark, a media artist from Halifax, explores the idea of knowledge. As he describes the themes in his work, “I am interested in the culture of science and the visual language of science that structures our experience in the world. In this way I am also interested in how we make connections and narrative meaning.”

This interest in how we create narratives runs throughout his portfolio. As he states, “I think one of the crucial materials I use in my work is the facts and histories of the world. I collect and organize stories and juxtapose them.” As for actual materials Clark uses a variety of things. “I have a strong interest in collage as a starting point so I use found images and found objects. I also like to actually build things with wood and metal. A lot of my work engages media so I shoot video, record and create sound, and generate graphics on the computer. I find myself going back and forth between the analogue materials of the world and the virtual images and spaces that I can create on the computer screen.”

When asked about how living in Halifax impacts his work, he states that in a digital world it really doesn’t. “I think digital artists in particular don’t rely on their immediate surroundings as much for their community and I suppose I’m like that.” For more on Clark’s work, click here.
